The Dock and Clip are two of the most popular and attractive features of
Window Maker. The Dock serves as a docking bay of sorts, allowing
appicon shortcuts and dockapps to be
attached while keeping them visible on the desktop. Shown above is the
default Dock configuration, consisting of the main Dock icon, an xterm
appicon shortcut, and the WPrefs icon. On the xterm icon, you will notice
three tiny dots in the lower left corner, indicating that this item can be
launched. WPrefs in this instance has already been launched, and the three
dots have disappeared indicating that it is currently running. The Dock can
be positioned vertically on either the left or right side of the screen.
The Clip serves as a Dock extender, and is much more flexible. With the
Clip, it is possible to attach workspace specific appicons (i.e those icons
would only be visible in a particular workspace), attract appicons and
mini-windows automatically when they're created, manage multiple appicons
as a group, switch between different workspaces, etc. The Clip has
an auto-hide feature that allows it to disappear from the screen when it
loses mouse focus, and can be placed anywhere on the screen.
Both the Dock and Clip support drag and drop through the use of the XDnD
protocol. It is possible to associate an action with a particular
appicon in the Dock or Clip, with that action being performed on whatever
object is dropped on it (e.g. a browser appicon could be added to the Dock
or Clip, with a defined action pointing to a program that could open the
dropped URL).
